The visiting opponents were veteran players, only because they had played a game already this season, a 39-26 win over New London.
Winfield-Mount Union defeated a Hawks team with no seniors on the roster, 27-26, in the Super Conference non-divisional game.
鈥淲e are short on numbers with a very young team and a lot of growing to come,鈥 said Taylor Hickey, Central Lee澳门开奖 second-year head coach, who graduated from Quincy University in 2019. 鈥淲e showed a lot of good spurts of potential.鈥
W-MU (2-0) outlasted the Hawks, who had the lead with 28 seconds remaining in the game.
The Wolves led 7-6 after the first quarter and 14-10 at the half.
It was a 21-15 advantage for the visitors to start the final quarter but the Hawks outscored W-MU 11-6 in the final frame.
Jayden Mueller, who earned varsity minutes last season subbing for Makayla Morrison, notched seven points, grabbed five rebounds, snared four steals and handed out two assists for the Hawks.
Two likely starters were unavailable for Central in Kenna Sandoval and Ellie Lake. Freshman Lizzie Mason started and scored six points with three steals.
鈥淟izzie will be an asset to our team,鈥 Hickey said. 鈥
Madisen Kellogg led W-MU with 15 points.
Taylor Jones and Sydnie Larson each pulled down eight rebounds for the Hawks.
鈥淭aylor played quality varsity minutes last year and had a strong start,鈥 Hickey said. 鈥淪he is athletic and made great takes to the basket.鈥
Jones scored five points while Larson and Riley Gregory had four points apiece.
The Hawks turned the ball over 28 times but countered with 20 steals.
Central Lee was 1-for-16 on 3-pointers, 1-for-13 on free throws.
Jones made the only free throw, Mueller the only triple.
鈥淲e did not have a good start offensively, so we will be spending time on our shooting and offenses,鈥 Hickey said. 鈥淲e have a lot of work to do in the next 10 days before we play Mediapolis.鈥
